American Rivers - Protect biodiversity: Freshwater mussel life cycle and research into decline
Переглядів 874 місяці тому
The Southeast US is a global biodiversity hotspot for freshwater mussels. Freshwater mussels are filter feeders with a fascinating life cycle that relies on the help of other species to live. Freshwater mussels are an important part of rivers to ensure clean, safe reliable drinking water, and we are researching the root causes of their decline to protect biodiversity for generations to come.

Tsegi Canyon

In far Northern Arizona on the Navajo Nation lies an archaeologically rich canyon, called Tsegi. Steeped in a rich cultural history tucked into the alcoves of these steep sandstone walls, this beautiful and remote canyon is home to a handful of Navajo ranching families who have, for generations, run cattle, sheep, and horses on the lush fertile grasses of the canyon floor. Slowly at first, thes...

nez perce are stepping up project
And in earthquake prone California our stupid governor and the Nevada Irrigation District in Placer County are pressing for more dams.
Current events in Minnesota should be a wake-up call for how important dam removal is!!
Sure what's next? Why not remove the Hoover dam? The Columbia River dams? Let's remove all the dams providing us with hydroelectric power and reservoirs for our drinking water. We don't need any of those things.
You still need to make clean fuel ,by making your own electricity .
Back in the 60s all the economy in Craig was just agriculture, then it died out in the 80s, and now what do we do?
This is bs. They killed millions of fish draining these dams. Salmon numbers are down in the US and have been for years. These Indians are just looking at dollars signs like everyone else.
The number one thing, no HOAs😮
Using this in school, thanks. How are the water levels? declining like the Colorado River?
It’s not just the dams but ocean conditions and Chinese Trawlers off the West Coast and Alaska of North America. National maritime boundaries need to be extended beyond the 200 miles to a minimum of 500 to 1,000 miles to protect the fisheries. We also have to bring beavers back and then possibly our fisheries will have a chance. New England has alot of dam removals as they’re attempting to bring alewife/herring back which feeds lobster/cod/etc. There is alot of work still to be done. Progress is being made though.
Climate change is not daunting it happens every year winter, summer, spring and fall so keep your hands off my climate change. I like climate change.
That is the seasons changing, not the climate. Parroting deniers' rhetoric just makes you look dumb and hateful.@aljay2955
Our country is run by idiots.
“Free flowing” yeah no kinda but not really, there’s still two dams and one is a diversion dam.
Climate change or not, dams were obsolete and didn’t make economic sense nor were they providing any benefit.
O Boy you must be a city liberal I grew up here . Before the dam start with the Japanese off the coast and our government can't touch them then over catching of Indian fish no regs. Then Casino money government funded. Watch your power bill go higher each bill. Southern CA. Sell your electric car no power to charge it. O can't go to work don't worry government will send you a check. HA HA
Maybe you could communicate your ideas better by just typing using your first language, and letting people use Google Translate to read it. What you typed is incomprehensible to an English speaker.
Don’t forget stocks of salmon and steelhead are down across the west. Not just dams rivers. I fish a free flowing river and it’s doing bad theses days. We need hatchery’s to plant smoltz by the million
bingo
Hatcheries are as bad as dams. Man is not smart enough to manage nature.
I turned the volume off , but the work was on the other side !
60 Minutes working on story about this scam
Whiner hydropower bot crying about science and objective reality
@samstheman6178: You are full of it. Go back to bed.
Total spin and taken out of context. This only keeps “ EPA agents” from saying a drainage ditch due to construction is a wetland. Do your research!
Not true. I went and looked and this will have a drastic impact on clean water by allowing developers to fill in wetlands that aren't "visually connected" to protected bodies of water. The unqualified members of the SCOTUS (not scientists) failed to realize that wetlands act as filters for groundwater. They are not protected and can be filled in and polluted...which guess what...pollutes drinking water sources. That is not a ditch.
None of us can survive without clean drinking water.
Haha - I love Splashy! Let's see more!
Thank you for drawing attention to a situation that needs to cooperation of many, if not all, people.👏👏
I think the Klamath is the river of the century! It was once one of the greatest life supporters on the West Coast. It was almost completely killed, and now it is being restored. Such a unique, beautiful River with some of the most caring, unique people living on it.
What an insane joke. You destroyed the river. Killed every living aquatic creature from the dam to the ocean. Can’t hide any longer the word is out. Failure in epic proportions.
Science needed to take over. Praying wasn't working.
Apparently you haven’t been there recently. There’s geese and ducks and their baby chics. There were cows grazing pretty close to the river, they didn’t die. They released a bunch of salmon in a different spot and so far they’re doing good 🤷🏽♀️ It’s already changed so much in just 3 months. It was never going to be fixed in the snap of a finger. It’s going to take time but it’s already improving quite a bit. You’re statement is false information, it’s fear mongering and hyperbole. It is OBVIOUSLY NOT DESTROYED 🙄🤡😂 Why do you want it to fail so bad? That’s just gross. You can hate that it was done, but it’s done. There’s no stopping it there is no going back or rebuilding. So be all big mad but why do you want it to be destroyed? We know some wildlife and thousand s of non native fish died. It was expected. It sucks and it’s really sad. But it’s literally not destroyed. So why keep saying it is?
I think some who had river front properties and lived along the river are mad, but these dams never should have been ... so when we are gone, salmon will be running again. This was right for the longevity of the land.
Maybe if you repeat the hydropower/rancher FUD talking points, they will somehow become true. Loser of epic proportions.
Get rid of the gill nets!
Glad I donate my contributions through my employers matching program and able to see the funds at work.
This song brings tears to my eyes. It is so powerful 😮
To clean the rivers of tijuana contact me and only if your a serious environmental clean up business. It's not that difficult to clean any river or water waste using a epa recognized means they have reported on how to do. The problem is the epa does not promote this method. And I tired to do it in Mexico but the officials all wanted us to pay them to clean and remove oil waste on agricultural land caused by flooding. Duh, I can afford to pay bribes.
Thanks for your advocacy
Thank you so much for your most important work. Water is life.
You want to bridge the divide? Start where it starts, the politicians protecting deep pockets and influence.
will be a joyous day when the river flows free
Stanislaus River is also bad now...
Most endangered rivers are all being self made. Removing dams all across America will be a very dumb mistake. smh
Well they just removed the dam where I live and there is nothing there now. Where we could fish and there was water before, now there is nothing but rocks and maybe ankle deep water in spots. 47 yrs of a beautiful river now looks like absolute garbage why again? I have a feeling you all are screwing things up more than helping.
Just noticed our dam was removed where I live in Indiana. Now we have ZERO fish. Where the dam was we had water flowing constantly. Now there is nothing there but small patches of water. I have never in my 47 yrs seen the "floor" of where our river is but now that is all that is there, rocks. How this is supposed to help anything or anyone is beyond me. Where we once fished.. you can't fish anymore. There are none. The water isn't deep enough. You can literally walk across.
Beautiful video.
Hello American Rivers--this video is well done, with spectacular footage. But if only 148 have viewed it after 9 months, then clearly it's not reaching many people. I live in the Chilkat Valley, and I'm grateful for your support. I really hope you can use your organization and Nation-wide scope to inform more American citizens about how special and precious the Chilkat River is! Gunalchéesh!
Is there an update on the water rights? Did that company end up winning and pulled the water out?
I grew up outside of Bethlehem and spent much time on the river. I wish the creators of this content would have explained why warehouses are so terrible. Living across the river from the Bethlehem Steel company I saw issues at the river daily. If you poked the sand at the riverbank you would see a small oil slick appear. We never caught Bass or Trout in the river. Only suckers. It was a shame that this waterway was so polluted. I left the area in 1979. The steel mill has closed down. I can only hope that it gets better.
830,000 dead salmon and counting. Throw in a herd of elk that got caught in the muck.
This has very interesting implications for the Russian River as well. For all the harm it caused, the Potter Valley Project kept water going to Lake Mendocino through the E. Fork Russian, which in turn fed the main stem and provided needed water for Salmon and Steelhead even in drier years. Dam removal is definitely good for our fish but it must be done intentionally and in a manner that doesn't cause unnecessary harm to the Russian River
As the Supervising Game Warden for that area from 1977 thru 1998 and growing up on the South Fork of the Eel at Leggett I came to hate those Dams. It always pained me to see so much habitat lost for so little gain. Lake Pillsbury was mostly about summer cabins and campgrounds. Few live there year round and are there for vacation. The river could return to a prime fishing location and produce an abundance of Salmon and Steelhead. The waters above produce nothing presently! About time!
This is a cause my family and I can definitely get behind. Thank you for this!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you’re a joke. You’re not the one losing your farm along the river.
Communist, California, ruining the livelihood of all the farms along the river. Gavin Newsom does not care. If California is doing it, you know it’s ass backwards.
